Antequera, the Dolmens, El Torcal and Bobadilla

Taxi Málaga Airport → Antequera

Antequera sits in the middle of Andalucía, a market town of churches and convents at the foot of the Peña de los Enamorados, with three prehistoric dolmens on its edge and the limestone maze of El Torcal above it. From Málaga Airport it is 55 km and about 45 minutes: the A-45 north over the Las Pedrizas pass, which is free, and the Antequera exit. We do not use the AP-46 toll tunnel unless you ask.

Drop-off

Antequera's historic centre has narrow one-way streets around the Alcazaba and the Real Colegiata, but cars can still get through to most doors, so the driver takes you to your hotel or flat. Around the Plaza del Portichuelo and the upper lanes near the castle we may stop a few metres short. For the parador or the hotels near the bullring there is a proper forecourt; for the dolmens visitor centre we drop you at its car park.

What awaits you

  • Dolmens of Menga, Viera and El Romeral
  • The Peña de los Enamorados skyline
  • El Torcal karst landscape and viewpoint

Up the A-45 and over Las Pedrizas

The road north out of Málaga is the A-45, and after the industrial estates and Casabermeja it climbs to the Las Pedrizas pass at around 780 metres. This is the free road; the AP-46 tunnel that bores under the pass shortens the climb by a few minutes but carries a toll, so we stay on the A-45 unless you ask us for the tunnel and pay it. Over the top the land flattens into the Antequera plain, and the Peña de los Enamorados, the rock that looks like a sleeping face, appears on the right. Exit at Antequera and you are in town 45 minutes from the airport, 55 km in all.

There is a second way in from the south-west by the A-357 and the Valle de Abdalajís road for the rare days when the Pedrizas pass is closed by fog or an accident; it is slower but pretty, winding under the cliffs of the Abdalajís mountains. In winter the driver checks the state of the pass before leaving.

Town of churches, dolmens and a rock with a face

Antequera is a town of thirty-odd churches and convents, most of them baroque, packed into a centre that rises to the Moorish Alcazaba and the Real Colegiata. The view from the Arco de los Gigantes across the roofs to the Peña is the postcard. On the eastern edge, ten minutes on foot from the centre, are the dolmens of Menga and Viera, two burial chambers of enormous stones five thousand years old and a UNESCO World Heritage site; El Romeral, the third, is a short drive away by the old sugar factory. Menga's entrance is aligned with the Peña de los Enamorados, which is the reason the rock matters as much as the stones.

El Torcal, the Lobo Park and a base for the region

Above the town the road climbs to El Torcal, a plateau of limestone eroded into towers and corridors, with marked circular walks from the visitor centre and ibex on the rocks. It is cold and windy up there even when Antequera is warm, and the car park fills on weekend mornings. Nearer the town is the Lobo Park wolf reserve and, to the west, the Fuente de Piedra lagoon with its flamingos in spring. Antequera also works as a base for Granada, Córdoba and Seville, all reachable by the A-92 and A-45, which is why the AVE stops at Antequera-Santa Ana station on the outskirts.

Local tips for your arrival

  • Bring a windproof layer for El Torcal even in May; the plateau sits at 1,200 metres and the wind cuts.
  • Menga and Viera are free to enter but have opening hours; check the Junta de Andalucía site before you go.
  • Antequera's molletes, the soft bread rolls, are worth ordering at breakfast; the porra antequerana is the local cold soup.
  • If you plan Granada or Seville later, the AVE from Antequera-Santa Ana is an option; the station is a few kilometres outside town.

Back to Málaga from Antequera

For the return, the driver collects you at the hotel or at the nearest accessible corner in the upper streets. The drive back is 45 minutes over the pass, so add the two hours the airport asks for, or two and a half in summer and for flights beyond Schengen, and you have your pick-up time: a 14:00 flight means leaving Antequera at about 11:15. Because the route is short, Antequera also makes an easy last night before an early flight. If you are continuing by AVE from Málaga-María Zambrano or joining a cruise at the port, the transfer costs the same and the driver drops you at the entrance.

From the train station or the cruise port

The fixed price to Antequera is the same from Málaga-María Zambrano train station and from the cruise port. Choose your origin in the form; the driver meets you at the platform exit or outside the cruise terminal.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Málaga Airport to Antequera?

The fixed fare to Antequera is €85 for a sedan carrying up to four people, €102 for the estate with the large boot and €128 for the minivan for five to eight. Bags, waiting time and VAT are included and the motorway carries no toll.

How long is the drive from Málaga Airport to Antequera?

Around 45 minutes for the 55 km, on dual carriageway for almost all of it. Summer Sundays, snow on the mountain roads and city festivals can stretch that; the driver allows for them when he sets your pickup.

Can you drop us at El Torcal instead of in Antequera town?

Yes, but ask for it when you book: El Torcal is about 15 km beyond the town up a mountain road, and the visitor centre car park at the top fills on weekends, when a shuttle runs from the lower car park. We quote the extra distance separately rather than treating it as the same price as Antequera.

How long is the transfer from Málaga Airport to Antequera?

About 45 minutes for 55 km by the A-45 over the Las Pedrizas pass. It is one of our shortest routes. Traffic is rarely a problem north of the city; the pass can slow in heavy rain or fog, and in that case the driver leaves a little earlier for the return.

Is the AP-46 toll motorway used on the way to Antequera?

Not unless you want it. The A-45 over the pass is free and only a few minutes slower than the AP-46 tunnel. If you would rather take the tunnel, say so when you book and the toll is paid separately; it is never built into the price.

Can we visit the dolmens on the way into Antequera?

The dolmens site is on the edge of town with its own car park, so it is a natural first stop before checking in. Ask when you book: a stop with waiting time is quoted separately, since the transfer price covers a direct journey. A one-hour visit is usual.

Where exactly will I find the driver at Málaga Airport?

Inside the arrivals hall of Terminal 3, standing with a board that shows your name. Every arriving flight, Terminal 2 ones included, walks out through that same hall, so there is only one place to look.
