Granada city, the Albaicín and the Alhambra hill

Taxi Málaga Airport → Granada

Granada sits at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, an hour and a half from Málaga Airport. Your driver takes the A-45 up over the Las Pedrizas pass, which is free, then joins the A-92 past Loja and drops down into the Vega. It is a fixed €199 by sedan, and the toll tunnel on the AP-46 is only used if you ask for it and pay it separately.

Drop-off

Most of the old town is closed to non-resident traffic: the Albaicín, the Realejo and the streets around the cathedral have camera-controlled entry points. If your hotel holds access, the driver takes you to the door; otherwise he drops you at the nearest permitted spot, such as Plaza Nueva or Gran Vía, and helps with the cases for the last few metres.

What awaits you

  • The Alhambra and the Generalife gardens
  • The Albaicín and its Moorish lanes
  • Tapas bars around Plaza Nueva

The road from Málaga: Las Pedrizas and the A-92

Leaving the airport you join the MA-20 ring road and then the A-45 north, the same motorway that climbs out of the Guadalhorce valley towards Antequera. The interesting bit is the Las Pedrizas pass: the free carriageway winds up through the hills with good views back over Málaga, while the AP-46 tunnel bores straight through and saves a few minutes for a toll. We use the free road unless you ask for the tunnel and pay it on the spot. At the Salinas junction the A-92 takes over, running east past Loja and the Sierra de Loja, then the plain of the Vega opens up and Granada appears with the mountains behind it. Around an hour and a half door to door, longer in the Friday evening rush.

Coming from the train station or the cruise port the timing is much the same, since both are a few minutes from the motorway. If you land late at night the road is empty and the trip is closer to eighty minutes; the only thing that slows us is the Granada ring road at the morning peak, between eight and nine.

A city where cars cannot go everywhere

Granada protects its historic quarters with restricted-access zones. The Albaicín, the Realejo, the lower Alhambra hill and the area around the cathedral and the Alcaicería are for residents and authorised vehicles only, and cameras at each entrance record every plate. Many hotels inside those zones can register a guest's vehicle for a short window, which is what lets our driver bring you to the door; if your accommodation is a flat or a small guesthouse without that arrangement, the closest legal stops are Plaza Nueva, Carrera del Darro at the bottom of the Albaicín, or Gran Vía and Plaza Isabel la Católica for the cathedral side. Tell us the exact address and we will know in advance where the car can stop.

The Albaicín in particular is a place of steep, stepped alleys where even a suitcase on wheels struggles. If you are staying up near San Nicolás or the Plaza Larga, expect a ten-minute uphill walk from the nearest drop and pack accordingly: a rucksack is easier than a trolley case on cobbles.

Timed Alhambra tickets and the hotels on the hill

Many people ride straight from the airport to the Alhambra because their ticket slot falls on arrival day. The Nasrid Palaces admit you only at the time printed on the ticket, so we build in a buffer of at least half an hour on top of the drive. Access by car is from the ring road along the Ronda Sur to the official Alhambra car park by the ticket pavilion, not through the city centre; from there it is a short walk to the entrance. If you are sleeping inside the monument grounds, at the Parador de Granada or the Alhambra Palace, the driver takes the Cuesta de Gomérez from Plaza Nueva through the Puerta de las Granadas, a route that is barred to general traffic but open for guests of those hotels.

Arriving with a family or a group

Granada is a good city for children, but the distance and the hills reward a little planning. Child seats are free, so ask for them in the booking form with the ages. Groups of five to eight travel together in a minivan for €299, which works out cheaper than two sedans, and if you are more than eight we send two vehicles that leave the airport together. For a weekend of skiing plus a couple of nights in the city, tell us both addresses and we quote the whole loop as one fixed price.

Local tips for your arrival

  • Send us your Alhambra ticket time when you book; we set the pickup so you arrive at the car park with thirty minutes in hand.
  • If you are staying in the Albaicín, put the exact street in the booking and pack in something you can carry up steps.
  • Granada evenings are cold from October to April even when Málaga is mild; keep a jacket accessible rather than deep in a suitcase.
  • Semana Santa and the Corpus fair in June fill the city and close extra streets to traffic; allow more time and expect a slightly longer walk to the door.

Back to Málaga from Granada

For the journey back we collect you at the hotel door or at the same legal stop where you were dropped, and the driver confirms the spot the day before by message. Allow the ninety-minute drive plus two hours at Málaga Airport for a flight within the Schengen area, or two and a half hours in summer and for flights to the UK and other non-Schengen destinations; from Granada that means leaving three and a half to four hours before departure. For a morning train from María Zambrano or a cruise boarding, the same arithmetic applies with the port or station in place of the terminal.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Málaga Airport to Granada?

The fixed fare to Granada is €199 for a sedan carrying up to four people, €239 for the estate with the large boot and €299 for the minivan for five to eight. Bags, waiting time and VAT are included and the motorway carries no toll.

How long is the drive from Málaga Airport to Granada?

Around 90 minutes for the 135 km, on dual carriageway for almost all of it. Summer Sundays, snow on the mountain roads and city festivals can stretch that; the driver allows for them when he sets your pickup.

Can you take me straight to the Alhambra for a timed ticket?

Yes. Alhambra tickets carry an entry time, so tell us the slot when you book and we plan the departure with margin. The driver goes round the ring road to the Alhambra car park by the ticket office, or up the Cuesta de Gomérez if you are staying at the Parador or the Alhambra Palace, which have their own access.

Do you use the AP-46 toll tunnel to Granada?

Not by default. The free A-45 goes over the Las Pedrizas pass and the toll tunnel saves only a few minutes. If you would rather take it, tell the driver and pay the toll on the spot; it is not part of the fixed price.

How long is the transfer from Málaga train station to Granada?

Roughly the same as from the airport, an hour and a half, because María Zambrano station is barely ten minutes from the A-45. The price is identical, €199 by sedan. The driver meets you at the platform exit and has your train number so he knows which arrival to watch.

Is Granada a day trip from a cruise ship docked in Málaga?

Yes, and it is the most popular one we do from the port. The car waits for you at the Alhambra or in the city while you visit, and brings you back to the terminal well before the sailing time. Send us the docking and departure hours and we quote the round trip as a single fixed price.

Where exactly will I find the driver at Málaga Airport?

Inside the arrivals hall of Terminal 3, standing with a board that shows your name. Every arriving flight, Terminal 2 ones included, walks out through that same hall, so there is only one place to look.
