Torrox Costa, El Morche and Torrox village

Taxi Málaga Airport → Torrox Costa

Torrox comes in two halves: Torrox Costa, the seafront strip around the lighthouse where most visitors stay, and Torrox pueblo, the white village 4 km up the hill. From the airport the drive is about 60 km and 50 minutes on the A-7, leaving at the Torrox Costa exit and finishing along the old N-340 coast road. It has a large German and Scandinavian community and a calmer feel than Nerja next door.

Drop-off

On the coast the driver drops you at the entrance to your apartment block; the seafront buildings near the lighthouse have their car access on the inland side, so the stop is sometimes at the back door rather than on the beach front. Laguna Beach and the other gated complexes have a barrier, and the driver goes through to the block if the porter opens it. For the village, the car stops in the lower streets and the centre is a short uphill walk.

What awaits you

  • Lighthouse and Roman remains at the end of the promenade
  • El Morche and El Peñoncillo beaches to the west
  • Torrox pueblo, the white village on the hillside

Viaducts, then the old coast road

East of Vélez-Málaga the A-7 changes character. It leaves the flat coastal plain and strides across the ravines of Algarrobo and Sayalonga on a series of tall viaducts, with the villages of the Axarquía dotted up the valleys on the left and the sea far below on the right. It is the most scenic stretch of the whole eastern motorway. The Torrox Costa exit comes after about 50 minutes and 60 km, and from there a short road winds down to the N-340, the old coast road that the motorway replaced and which still serves as the seafront street of Torrox Costa, El Morche and El Peñoncillo.

That last section along the N-340 is where the time varies. In winter it is three minutes; on an August evening, with the promenade full and cars hunting for parking, it can be ten. Either way it is the only slow part of the trip.

Costa or pueblo: the two Torrox

Torrox Costa is the seafront: a promenade running from El Morche to the lighthouse, backed by apartment blocks built from the 1970s onwards, with German bakeries, Scandinavian cafés and long-stay residents who came for the winter and stayed. At the eastern end, beside the Faro, are the excavated remains of a Roman settlement and fish-salting works. Torrox pueblo is four kilometres up the hill: a white village of steep streets around the Plaza de la Constitución, with the town's own claim to the best climate in Europe on its signs. The pueblo is markedly quieter, more Spanish and cooler at night. The Fiesta de las Migas, on the Sunday before Christmas, fills the village with visitors for the day.

Make sure your booking says which of the two you want. The price is the same from the airport; the road up to the pueblo simply adds a few minutes. Most first-time visitors book the Costa; people who come back year after year, especially in winter, tend to drift up to the pueblo or to a house on the slopes between the two.

Finding the complexes

Much of the accommodation on this stretch is in named complexes rather than on numbered streets: Laguna Beach at the western end, the blocks around the Faro, Ferrara beach, El Peñoncillo towards Nerja and Calaceite further on. Several are gated, with a barrier and a porter's lodge, and the driver takes you through to your block when the barrier is opened. Others open directly onto the N-340 with their car entrance on the inland side. Send us the complex name and, if you have it, the block or portal number, and the driver will know where to stop before you land.

Local tips for your arrival

  • Write Costa or pueblo clearly in the address: the same street name can exist in both and they are ten minutes apart by car.
  • If your complex has a barrier, ask your host how visitors get in at night; a code or the porter's hours saves waiting at the gate.
  • Long-stay guests with several large cases and a bike or golf bag should book the estate rather than the sedan.
  • For the Fiesta de las Migas weekend the village streets close to cars; arrange the drop-off at the lower car park and walk up.

Back to Málaga from Torrox Costa

For the return the driver waits outside your complex or at the barrier if the porter is not there to open it, and drives back along the N-340 to the motorway. With 50 minutes to the airport, plan to leave Torrox Costa two hours and fifty minutes before a Schengen departure; in summer, and for flights to Britain or other non-Schengen countries, three hours twenty is the sensible margin. From the pueblo add ten minutes. If you are heading for a train at María Zambrano or a ship at the cruise port, the run is about 45 minutes and the fare is the same as to the airport. Ask us if you are unsure how early to set the alarm.

From the train station or the cruise port

The fixed price to Torrox Costa is the same from Málaga-María Zambrano train station and from the cruise port. Choose your origin in the form; the driver meets you at the platform exit or outside the cruise terminal.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Málaga Airport to Torrox Costa?

The fixed fare to Torrox Costa is €85 for a sedan carrying up to four people, €102 for the estate with the large boot and €128 for the minivan for five to eight. Bags, waiting time and VAT are included and the motorway carries no toll.

How long is the drive from Málaga Airport to Torrox Costa?

Around 50 minutes for the 60 km, on dual carriageway for almost all of it. Summer Sundays, snow on the mountain roads and city festivals can stretch that; the driver allows for them when he sets your pickup.

What is the road like from the motorway exit down to Torrox Costa?

Short. From the A-7 exit the road winds down to the sea in about five minutes and joins the N-340 by the promenade. In summer the coast road between El Morche and the lighthouse fills up in the early evening, but it is a couple of kilometres, so even at its worst it costs a few minutes, not half an hour.

We are seven people going to Laguna Beach. Does the minivan get into the complex?

Yes. The minivan carries up to eight passengers and eight cases for €128, and Laguna Beach has a normal vehicle entrance with a barrier; the driver goes through to your block once the gate is opened. Tell us the block letter or number and the driver will find it without touring the whole complex.

Can we be dropped in Torrox pueblo instead of on the coast?

Certainly. The road climbs from the coast to the village in about ten minutes and the price from the airport is the same €85 in a sedan. The centre of the village is steep and narrow, so the driver stops as close to your street as the car can reach and carries the cases the last stretch if needed.

Is Torrox a good base without a hire car?

For a beach stay, yes: the promenade has shops, restaurants and a supermarket within walking distance, and buses along the N-340 connect Torrox Costa with Nerja in one direction and Torre del Mar and Málaga in the other, timetables from the operator. The pueblo is served by a local bus from the coast. For the hill villages inland you would need a car or a taxi.

Where exactly will I find the driver at Málaga Airport?

Inside the arrivals hall of Terminal 3, standing with a board that shows your name. Every arriving flight, Terminal 2 ones included, walks out through that same hall, so there is only one place to look.
