Taxi Málaga Airport → Almuñécar
Almuñécar is the main resort of the Costa Tropical, a town with a Roman and Moorish past sitting between two beaches under the castle of San Miguel. The transfer from Málaga Airport is about 88 km and 70 minutes: A-7 eastwards with no toll, then the Almuñécar exit and the old N-340 down into the centre. Along the way you pass the sugar-cane valleys and the avocado and custard-apple terraces that give the coast its name.
Prices by vehicle
| Vehicle | Total price (VAT included) |
|---|---|
| Sedan 1-4 passengers, 3 suitcases. | €115 |
| Estate 1-4 passengers, 5 suitcases, skis or golf bags. | €138 |
| Minivan 5-8 passengers, 8 suitcases. | €173 |
Single journey, VAT included, on toll-free roads; the AP-46 tunnel at Las Pedrizas is optional and settled separately if you want it. A return is exactly twice this figure. Starting at the train station or the cruise port changes nothing in the price.
Drop-off
The old town under the castle is a maze of lanes too narrow for a car, so if you are staying there we stop at the nearest point, usually Plaza de la Constitución or the top of Avenida de Andalucía, and walk the last few metres with your bags. Hotels on Paseo de San Cristóbal, Velilla beach and Cotobro all have road access to the door, and the driver unloads directly at reception.

What awaits you
- San Miguel castle above the old town
- Peñón del Santo between the two beaches
- Paseo de San Cristóbal and its seafront bars
Sugar cane, avocados and the old N-340
The motorway takes you most of the way: A-7 from the airport ring road, past the Axarquía towns and through the tunnels beyond Nerja, in about 70 minutes for 88 km with nothing to pay. At the Almuñécar exit you drop onto the old N-340, which is where the trip becomes interesting. The road crosses the Río Verde valley, once solid sugar cane and now terraces of avocado, mango and custard apple, before curving round the last hill into town.
First impressions from the car: the Peñón del Santo rock splitting the bay, the castle on the hill behind, and the aqueduct arches inland near Torrecuevas if you come in by the upper road. The driver will use whichever entrance is closest to your address; Cotobro and the western end are reached from the N-340 before the centre, Velilla and Taramay from the far side.
Old town, castle and the two beaches
Almuñécar's old quarter climbs from Plaza de la Constitución up to the castle of San Miguel, a Moorish fortress rebuilt after the conquest, with whitewashed lanes, a Roman fish-salting factory in the Parque del Majuelo and a small archaeological museum inside a Roman vault. Below it the town splits into two beaches around the Peñón del Santo: San Cristóbal to the west, with the long promenade and its bars, and Puerta del Mar to the east, closer to the market and the bus station. Both are pebbly, so bring water shoes for children.
Summer, festivals and the family angle
July and August are when Almuñécar fills: Jazz en la Costa in the Majuelo park in July, the Virgen de la Antigua fiestas around 15 August with a procession by sea, and the beaches busy from mid-morning. Book your transfer early for those weeks and allow a few extra minutes for the last stretch into town. Out of season the place is lively still, with a Sunday market and the Loro Sexi bird park by the castle for children. Child seats go in the car at no charge; tell us ages when you book.

Local tips for your arrival
- Give the exact street of an old-town flat; many lanes share similar names and the driver will pick the closest accessible corner.
- Beaches here are grey pebble, not sand: water shoes for kids save the first afternoon.
- The bus station is on Avenida Juan Carlos I if you plan day trips along the coast; timetables from the operator.
- Jazz en la Costa runs in July in the Majuelo park; book the transfer as soon as you have flights for those dates.
Back to Málaga from Almuñécar
Going home, the driver collects you at the hotel entrance or, in the old town, at the corner where you were dropped off. Work back from your flight: 70 minutes to the airport plus the two hours the airlines want you there, and two and a half in July and August or if you fly outside Schengen. For a 10:00 flight that is a pick-up around 6:15. The same car takes you to the María Zambrano station for the AVE or to the cruise terminal at the same price; tell us which one when you book so the driver plans the last turn in Málaga.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Málaga Airport to Almuñécar?
The fixed fare to Almuñécar is €115 for a sedan carrying up to four people, €138 for the estate with the large boot and €173 for the minivan for five to eight. Bags, waiting time and VAT are included and the motorway carries no toll.
How long is the drive from Málaga Airport to Almuñécar?
Around 70 minutes for the 88 km, on dual carriageway for almost all of it. Summer Sundays, snow on the mountain roads and city festivals can stretch that; the driver allows for them when he sets your pickup.
Which side of Almuñécar should I book, San Cristóbal or Velilla?
San Cristóbal is the town beach, next to the old quarter, the Peñón del Santo and most restaurants, so you can walk everywhere. Velilla is the longer beach east of the centre, quieter, with apartment blocks and a promenade of its own. Either way the transfer price is the same; just give us the exact address.
How long is the drive from Málaga Airport to Almuñécar?
About 70 minutes for 88 km. Almost all of it is the A-7; the only slow part is the last few kilometres of the N-340 into the centre, which crawl on August evenings. There are no toll roads on the way.
Can you take us straight to Playacálida or another hotel on the seafront?
Yes. The seafront hotels, from Cotobro to Velilla, all have a drop-off at the door. Put the hotel name in the booking and the driver goes to its main entrance; you do not need the street address, though it helps for smaller apartment hotels.
Is Almuñécar a good base for visiting Granada and the Alhambra?
It is a common plan: a few days on the coast, then a day in Granada. By car it is a little over an hour via Motril and the A-44. Alhambra tickets sell out well ahead, so book them on the official site before you fix the day.
Where exactly will I find the driver at Málaga Airport?
Inside the arrivals hall of Terminal 3, standing with a board that shows your name. Every arriving flight, Terminal 2 ones included, walks out through that same hall, so there is only one place to look.
