Roquetas de Mar, the Urbanización and Aguadulce

Taxi Málaga Airport → Roquetas de Mar

Roquetas de Mar is the last big resort before Almería: 195 km and around two hours and five minutes from Málaga Airport, all on the A-7. After the coastal stretch to Motril the motorway runs behind the greenhouses of El Ejido, and you leave it at the Roquetas exit for the final ten minutes down to the beach hotels. Nothing to pay on the road. As with every route over 150 km, book 48 hours ahead.

Drop-off

Almost every hotel in Roquetas is on the Urbanización, a long, flat grid between the Avenida de las Gaviotas and the seafront, with wide roads and proper forecourts. The driver pulls into the hotel entrance and unloads at reception. Aguadulce, on the cliff road towards Almería, and the old fishing harbour area have narrower streets but still let the car reach the door. Tell us the exact hotel name; there are many, and several sound alike.

What awaits you

  • Playa Serena and the hotel strip
  • The lighthouse and Santa Ana castle
  • Punta Entinas salt flats and flamingos

Two hours along the sea to the resort before Almería

Roquetas de Mar is the big beach resort of Almería province and, coming from Málaga, you reach it ten kilometres before the city. The driver follows the A-7 east along the whole coast, through the tunnels past Nerja and Almuñécar, beyond Motril and Adra, and leaves the motorway at the Roquetas exit for the last run down to the sea. It is 195 kilometres, about 125 minutes, and there is no toll anywhere on the way. The fixed price of €275 for a sedan is slightly below the Almería fare because the resort lies a few minutes closer.

The Urbanización, the old port and Aguadulce

Most hotels stand in the Urbanización, a long, flat strip of large resorts along the beach south of the old town, with wide avenues and hotel forecourts where the car stops at reception. The old town of Roquetas, around the port and the castle of Santa Ana, has smaller streets and apartments reached at the kerb. Aguadulce, a separate marina and beach district a few kilometres towards Almería, is within the same fixed price; tell us the hotel name and the driver leaves the motorway at the right exit for it.

Families, all-inclusive weeks and late flights

This is a family route more than any other on our list: big hotels, kids' clubs and a wide, safe beach. Child seats are free, and the estate at €330 takes the pushchair and five suitcases without squeezing. Many arrivals are on evening flights; the driver tracks your landing, the pickup moves with a delay at no charge, and the A-7 is quiet after dark, so a night transfer takes no longer than a daytime one. Ask for a stop at a service area if you travel with small children.

The greenhouse plain and the road ahead

From Adra to Roquetas the motorway crosses the Campo de Dalías, the vast plain of plastic greenhouses that supplies Europe with winter vegetables; it is a strange, shining landscape and the last thing you see before the sea. Roquetas is also a base for the Cabo de Gata park, an hour east, and for the Tabernas desert inland. If you want the driver to take you on to either of them on another day, we quote it as a separate journey.

Local tips for your arrival

  • Give us the hotel name: the Urbanización is several kilometres long and the driver picks the right approach road.
  • Travelling with children? Ask for child seats in the form and a rest stop halfway; both are free.
  • Book 48 hours ahead so the car is reserved for the day, and add your flight number.
  • If your hotel is in Aguadulce, say so; it has its own exit and the driver saves you the loop through Roquetas.

Back to Málaga from Roquetas de Mar

For the trip home the driver collects you at the hotel reception in the Urbanización, at your apartment door in the old town or in Aguadulce, at the hour you choose. Roquetas to Málaga Airport is 125 minutes; add two hours in the terminal, two and a half in summer or for flights outside Schengen, so a one o'clock flight means leaving at about half past eight. On the way back the driver can stop once for a break, which matters with children after a week at the beach.

From the train station or the cruise port

The fixed price to Roquetas de Mar is the same from Málaga-María Zambrano train station and from the cruise port. Choose your origin in the form; the driver meets you at the platform exit or outside the cruise terminal.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Málaga Airport to Roquetas de Mar?

The fixed fare to Roquetas de Mar is €275 for a sedan carrying up to four people, €330 for the estate with the large boot and €413 for the minivan for five to eight. Bags, waiting time and VAT are included and the motorway carries no toll.

How long is the drive from Málaga Airport to Roquetas de Mar?

Around 125 minutes for the 195 km, on dual carriageway for almost all of it. Summer Sundays, snow on the mountain roads and city festivals can stretch that; the driver allows for them when he sets your pickup.

We land late in the evening; is a night transfer to Roquetas a problem?

No. The A-7 is quiet after dark and the run takes about the same time. Your driver meets the flight whatever the hour, and the fixed price is identical by night. Most large resort hotels have a 24-hour reception, but check with yours and keep the booking reference to hand.

Why is Roquetas cheaper than Almería when they are next to each other?

Because coming from Málaga you reach Roquetas first, about ten kilometres before the city, and our fixed prices follow distance. Roquetas is €275 for a sedan and Almería €279; Aguadulce, between the two, is included in the Roquetas price.

Is there a rest stop on the two-hour drive to Roquetas?

Yes, whenever you like. Tell the driver and he stops at a service area on the A-7, usually around Motril or Adra, for ten or fifteen minutes. It is not charged and does not change the fixed price.

Can two families share a minivan to Roquetas?

Yes. The minivan carries up to eight passengers and eight suitcases for €413 one way, which is less than two sedans. Child seats for all the children are free; tell us how many of each type in the booking form.

Where exactly will I find the driver at Málaga Airport?

Inside the arrivals hall of Terminal 3, standing with a board that shows your name. Every arriving flight, Terminal 2 ones included, walks out through that same hall, so there is only one place to look.

How much notice do the long routes need?

Two days for anything beyond 150 kilometres: Seville, Córdoba, Jaén, Úbeda, Almería, Roquetas, Mojácar, Sierra Nevada, Lanjarón and Guadix. The car and the driver are set aside for most of a day. Nearer destinations are usually confirmed the same day.
